They just need someone to give them another chance to be part of a family. Rescue dogs are often trained, loving animals who simply need a second chance.

The 3-3-3 Rule for New Adopters

Infographic explaining the 3-3-3 rule for adopting a rescue dog: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn routines, and 3 months to fully adjust and trust.

National Rescue Dog Day 2025 is about teaching people who get a new pet how to help their dog adjust.

When you bring a rescue dog home things can be a little crazy.

The 3-3-3 rule is a way to know what to expect from your rescue dog in the first few days then the first few weeks and finally the first few months, with your new rescue dog.

Breakdown of the 3-3-3 Rule

3 Days – Decompression Stage :

Rescue dogs can feel really overwhelmed. They get confused. Sometimes they just shut down. This happens to rescue dogs because they have been through a lot, with the rescue dogs. The rescue dogs need some time to feel safe with the rescue dogs.

People with this problem do not eat a lot they. They seem really anxious or they seem really timid. The people, with this problem may not eat much. They may hide. They may seem anxious. They may seem timid.

Giving them space is really important. They need an environment where they can be themselves. Having routines is also very important for them. This helps them feel safe and secure with the people around them which's very important for their well being. Giving them space and a quiet environment along, with routines is something that they really need.

3 Weeks – Learning Stage :

The dog starts to get what is going on every day. It knows who the family members are. The dog feels safer, with the people it knows. The dog understands the routine. That makes the dog feel better.

You will start to see the childs personality come out. The child may also try to see how far they can go. The childs personality is going to emerge. You will notice this and at the same time the child may test boundaries to find out what they can and cannot do.

Gentle, positive reinforcement training is helpful during this stage.

3 Months – Trust & Bonding Stage :

The dog is probably feeling really comfortable by now. The dog is forming a strong bond with the people, around the dog.

People know what they are supposed to do at home. They are aware of the household rules and the household expectations. The household rules and the household expectations are clear, to them.

This thing helps people have a trust and a lot of affection, for each other and it also helps them become a part of life. It really notices the trust that people have the affection they feel and how well they integrate into life.

Advantages of the 3-3-3 Rule

Sets realistic expectations for first-time adopters.

Promotes patience and understanding, reducing early returns to shelters.

Helps adopters track progress and identify areas needing attention.

Encourages structured support during the adjustment period.

Potential Disadvantages of Challenges

The 3-3-3 timeline is not the same for all dogs. Some dogs need time to get used to things and some dogs need less time. The 3-3-3 timeline is a guide, for the dogs.

May oversimplify complex behaviors or trauma responses in some rescue dogs.

People who adopt dogs might feel really down if the dog takes a time to get used to the new place. The dog adoption process can be tough. Adopters of dogs might feel discouraged if the dog takes longer to settle into the new home. Adopters of dogs should be patient, with the dog.

The 3-3-3 rule is still a thing to keep in mind especially on National Rescue Dog Day 2025. We should tell people about the 3-3-3 rule, on media in the brochures we give to people who adopt dogs and when we check in with them after they adopt a dog. This will help the dogs get used to their homes and make sure everything works out well for a long time with the 3-3-3 rule.

Step 1 : Research and Choose a Shelter

Look for local animal shelters or rescue organizations.

When you are looking at a group you should read what other people have to say about them. This is so you can make sure the group is an one and that they are honest, with you. You want to know that the group is reputable which means they are trustworthy and do things. You also want to know that they are transparent which means they are open and tell you everything you need to know about them. Read reviews to find out about the group and make sure they are reputable and transparent.

Step 2 : Fill Out an Application

Be honest about your lifestyle, home, and experience with pets.

A lot of animal shelters want to find a dog that's a good fit for our home and the way we live. They want to make sure the dog and our environment are a match. The shelters think about the kind of dog that would be happy and safe, in our home. Many shelters want to match the dog to our environment.

Step 3 : Meet the Dogs

Visit the shelter and meet dogs in person.

Take the time-don’t rush into a decision based on appearance alone.

Step 4 : Ask Questions

Ask about the dog’s background, medical history, and behavior.

You should find out if they have been around children before. It is also an idea to know if they have been around other pets.. You should check if they have been in a home with a family before. This will help you understand how they will act in these situations with the kids, other pets or, in a home setting.

Step 5 : Arrange a Home Visit (if required)

Some animal rescues may want to see the home setup to make sure the home is safe for the animal. They want to know that the home is a place for the animal to live. The animal rescues do this to ensure the home setup is safe, for the animal.

Step 6 : Prepare The Home

Buy food, bowls, a leash, a collar, a bed, and toys.

To make the dog feel safe you should set up a space for the dog. The dog needs a space where the dog can go when the dog feels scared or nervous. This quiet space, for the dog will help the dog feel safe and calm.

Step 7 : Finalize the Adoption

Pay the adoption fee and complete any paperwork.

Schedule a vet checkup within the first week.

Step 8 : Welcome Them Home

  • Give them time to adjust-follow the 3-3-3 rule.
  • Begin gentle training, bonding, and regular routines.

I am now ready to give a rescue dog a chance. Giving a rescue dog a chance is a big decision. These steps can help me make sure that I have an adoption of the rescue dog and the rescue dog has a happy new beginning, with me. The rescue dog will get a home and I will get a new friend.
